Alec Celebrates Record GCSE Results

Alec Hunter students collected their exam results last week, and the vast majority had huge smiles on their faces. They have torn up the record books and outperformed all preceding year groups at the College by a very clear margin.

51% of our Year 11s have gained 5 or more A*-C grades including English and Maths, a rise of 20% on last year’s figure of 31%. Almost two-thirds of the cohort will leave Alec Hunter with 5 higher grade passes (A*-C), compared with just over a third of students 4 years ago. This is an outstanding achievement and a huge credit to all the staff and parents who have worked so hard to support the students, but above all to the students themselves. Most will now have secured the grades they need to get into College or Sixth Form or to pursue other routes, and can look forward to the next stage of their education or career with confidence.

Particular praise is due to the following students, who achieved the most impressive array of top grades:

Jemima Paine – 8 A* and 3 A grades        Chloe Beckett – 6 A* and 5 A grades

Rebecca Perrin – 6 A* and 3 A grades        Elliot Boakes – 5 A* and 6 A grades

Jody Baxter – 5 A* and 4 A grades        Roxanne Chan – 4 A* and 7 A grades

Mitchell Childs – 4 A* and 6 A grades        Charlotte Bywaters – 4 A* and 6 A grades

Rebecca Stone – 3 A* and 4 A grades        James Bruce – 2 A* and 7 A grades

Congratulations to all our students on this phenomenal success, a clear indication of the high standard of educational provision offered at Alec Hunter. We wish you all well for the future!

GCSE Success in Braintree and Coggeshall

This year, as a declaration of our commitment to collaborative working, the governors and headteachers of Alec Hunter Humanities College, Honywood Community Science School, Notley High School and Tabor Science College decided to release a joint statement in recognition of the efforts made by all students across the district. We are dedicated to ensuring that every child, regardless of where they live or which school they attend, has access to a high standard of education and the opportunity to fulfil their potential.

At Honywood, 65% of pupils gained 5 or more GCSE passes at grades A* to C including gaining a grade C or better in both English and Maths. The figures for Notley were 56% and Tabor 50%.

Behind these headline figures were hundreds of individual ‘bests’; pupils who had studied their hearts out, regularly committing fifteen or more hours each week on their studies outside the classroom, attending extra sessions at weekends and in their holidays, ensuring they leave school this year with the very best outcomes of which they were capable. The four Headteachers at our local schools have issued this joint statement:

We applaud the outstanding efforts made by our pupils to go above and beyond what we could expect of them – they thoroughly deserve these excellent outcomes. Our young people leave us extremely well qualified to succeed in their lives, whatever options they now wish to explore. GCSE success is one element of that, but we would also like to comment on the broad range of skills our youngsters have mastered in their five years at our schools. They can solve problems, think for themselves, are empathetic and ICT literate to name just four of their key skills and attributes. They will make an exceptionally positive contribution to the life of their community and we reiterate our pride in their achievements.

We are delighted that the quality of provision in our area provides our young people with such an excellent start in their lives and would like to thank all colleagues in our four schools for the outstanding commitment they have once again shown to our pupils”

Trevor Lawn – Acting Headteacher, Alec Hunter Humanities College

Simon Mason – Headteacher, Honywood Community Science School

Simon Thompson – Headteacher, Notley High School

Steven Clark – Headteacher, Tabor Science College
